Mobile Outreach Skills Training (M.O.S.T.®) trains workers, often disadvantaged, for skilled jobs and places them in well-paying entry level positions after two weeks of intensive training.

Nine previously unemployed workers, including four veterans, recently graduated from the Florida MEP M.O.S.T.® training program to begin full-time employment in Naples.

Company officials with Pelican Wire turned to Florida MEP’s M.O.S.T.® program to assist with employee recruitment, training and follow-up on-the-job training. In partnership with Southwest Florida Works, Florida MEP provided job training with customized training funds.

“The M.O.S.T.® program has been a valuable training partner for our company,” said Theodore Bill, President and CEO of Pelican Wire. “The recruitment and applicant screening provided by M.O.S.T.® helped ensure that we were presented with a qualified pool of job applicants, while the customized curriculum provided trainees with the specific skills we needed. It’s a well-conceived, comprehensive training program that can really help manufacturers ramp up employment fast.”

The M.O.S.T.® customized curriculum includes lean-to-green manufacturing, shop math and blueprint reading, as well as specialized skills required by the manufacturer.

The nine individuals in the summer program were guaranteed employment by Pelican Wire if they completed the initial two-week intensive training. During this initial phase, trainees acquired the specific skills needed to rapidly move into front-line manufacturing jobs on the shop floor. The customized curriculum included lean-to-green manufacturing, shop math and blueprint reading, as well as specialized skills such as wire-twisting, binding, spooling, coating and knowledge of electrical resistance.

The ability to rapidly customize the training to meet employer requirements distinguishes Florida MEP’s M.O.S.T.® program from other traditional training programs. Florida MEP project managers will provide 6 months on-the-job training and mentoring to develop the trainees’ skills proficiency and ensure a high job retention rate, which is critical to employers.

The M.O.S.T.® jobs training program has achieved impressive results: a completion rate of 94 percent, a job placement rate of 96 percent, and a job retention rate after six months of 91 percent. These results far exceed placement and retention rates of traditional job training programs at a fraction of the cost.
